Thiess
From its beginnings as a roads contractor on the Darling Downs in 1934, Thiess has evolved into a leading mining, construction and services contractor with diverse operations throughout Australia and selected international markets.
In May 1958, Thiess Brothers won national acclaim when it became the first Australian company to be awarded a major contract on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.
At the time, all major contracts had gone to international companies. Sir Lesley Thiess and his brothers saw this as an opportunity to show what Australians could do. Thiess Brothers would become the largest contractor on the Snowy, successfully completing four major contracts worth more than $98.7 million.
It was a bold step in an amazing journey that would see Thiess play a unique and pivotal role in Australia's construction history.
The company has gone on to deliver a wide range of essential infrastructure projects, ranging from highways and airports, to dams, ports and hospitals. Thiess is now also one of Australia's largest mining contractors, working in partnership with international mining and exploration corporations across the country.
In 1983, Thiess became part of Leighton Holdings Limited, Australia’s largest project development and contracting group.
