Decontamination of Cheoy Lee Shipyard, Hong Kong

In 2002 Thiess Services was awarded a $68M contract to remediate the Cheoy Lee Shipyard, which formed part of the site on which Hong Kong Disneyland was built.

The site was contaminated by dioxins, PCBs, PAHs and a range of metals.

The remediation project involved thermal treatment of 75,000 tonnes of dioxin contaminated soil using indirect thermal desorption, solidification and stabilisation of 130,000 tonnes of metal contaminated soils, and ex-situ bioremediation of 16,000 tonnes of heavy hydrocarbon contaminated soil using active biopiling.

Thiess Services was responsible for all aspects of the project, including obtaining licences and permits, operation of thermal and solidification and stabilisation treatment plants, and validation of excavations.
