Chemical Industrial Sites

Rhodes Remediation Projects, Sydney, NSW, Australia

Thiess Services has been contracted to remediate neighbouring former industrial sites and portions of the adjoining Homebush Bay at Rhodes Peninsula in inner-western Sydney, NSW.

The sites were once the location of the former Lednez / Union Carbide and Allied Feeds chemical manufacturing plants.Thiess Services is using Directly-heated Thermal Desorption (DTD) technology to remediate contaminated soil from the sites and sediment from adjoining sections of Homebush Bay. Once remediated, the sites will be suitable for the development of residential apartments and public open space with direct access to the waterfront.

The project sites have been recognised as containing some of the worst contamination known, including organochlorine pesticides and dioxins and rival remediation contractors, regulators and consultants have shown great interest in how DTD technology is being applied to such complex projects in Australia.

Remediation of the Lednez / Union Carbide site began in mid-2006 and is due for completion in mid-2010. Works have included excavation, classification, backfilling and reinstatement of 450,000m3 of contaminated material with 100,000m3 of this material requiring treatment.

Continuous soil treatment operations at the Allied Feeds project began in October 2006 and were completed in late 2009. The project involved the excavation and treatment of approximately 120,000m3 of material, which was returned to the site as backfill.

Thiess Services employs emission testing specialists to monitor the quality of the gas discharged from the DTD plant and ensure emission levels meet strict criteria set by the project regulator, the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change.
