Newington Earthworks, Homebush, NSW, Australia

In 1997 Thiess Services was awarded a $27 million contract to remediate and rehabilitate the former Royal Australian Navy Newington Armaments Depot, which then became the site of the Athletes Village for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

The project included excavation and on-site containment of 820,000 cubic metres of hazardous waste, segregation and storage of chemical waste, construction of leachate drains and cut-offs, importation of clean soils, realignment of Haslams Creek, construction of stormwater drains, wetlands, rock gabions, bridge abutments and roads.


Albion Explosives Factory, VIC, Australia

In 1999 Thiess Services was contracted by the Australian Defence Department for remediation works at the Albion Explosives Factory.
 
The project included excavation of 180 hectares of soil contaminated by the former explosives manufacturing facilities. The soil was contained in a triple-lined hazardous waste cell.
